April 16, 2024Is Airspace in the Middle East closed?
The airspace in the Middle East got shut down because Iran attacked Israel with drones. This caused flights to either stop or change direction. For example, United Airlines had to stop its flight from Newark to Tel Aviv because Israel closed its airspace. Jordan and Iraq also closed their airspace, messing up flight plans in the region.
United Airlines is keeping an eye on the situation and will decide about future flights based on safety. They’re the only U.S. airline flying to Israel since October. Delta Airlines was supposed to start flights to Tel Aviv on June 7th, but it hasn’t happened yet. American Airlines hasn’t resumed flights to Israel either.
United Airlines even canceled its flight from Washington Dulles International Airport to Amman, Jordan, because of issues in the Middle East affecting flight plans.
Nobody knows when flights will get back to normal. Some flights had to take detours around the Middle East, making them late. Swiss International Airlines mentioned this.
Flightradar24 reported that many flights to Tel Aviv and Amman had to find alternate routes on Saturday, messing up flight schedules and travel plans.
Flights were canceled for Sunday too. El Al, an Israeli airline, canceled over 20 flights, causing problems for travelers. Two flights from Thailand to Israel had to land in Bangkok instead. El Al told passengers to hold off going to the airport until further notice.
Emirates Airline scrapped its flight from Dubai to Amman on Sunday, which impacted flight plans. Air France and British Airways also canceled flights to Israel on Sunday, causing disruptions to travel plans. Lufthansa stopped its flights to Israel as well, creating problems for travelers and tourism.
